Acetyl L Carnitine Powder

Acetyl-L-carnitine ( ALCAR) is an acetylated form of the amino acid L-carnitine and is either synthesised from the amino acids lysine and methionine, or obtained through the diet from meats and vegetables.

Whilst it is similar to L-carnitine and has some similar functions, ALCAR is absorbed into the bloodstream more efficiently than L-Carnitine and more importantly, Acetyl-L-Carnitine passes more effectively through cell membranes and is utilized more efficiently in the mitochondria of the cell.

Alcar is believed to act by boosting the function of the mitochondria inside each of our cells. As we age, the mitochondria are believed to be the 'Achilles heel' for absorbing age related damage, their loss of function is one part of what we term ageing. Alcar may help protect the brain by nourishing NMDA-sensitive glutamate receptors, which normally decline with age. ALC also helps prevent the formation of lipofuscin (a potassium age pigment), reduces lipid peroxidation in the brain and increases cerebral blood flow.

In a clinical setting alcar has been shown to reverse symptoms associated with mental decline in the elderly, alleviate symptoms of Parkinson's disease , act as a neuroprotective in instances of cerebral ischemia, and peripheral nerve injury as well as well as being useful in the management of Alzheimer’s disease.
