BCAA Powder

Branched-Chain Amino Acids (BCAA's) are a group of three essential amino acids: isoleucine, leucine, and valine.

The combination of these three essential amino acids make up approximately one third of skeletal muscle in the human body. While a large amount of the other amino acids when ingested are degraded and taken up by the liver and other tissues of the gut, the BCAA's enter into circulation relatively unhindered as the liver lacks the enzyme responsible for initiating their breakdown.

BCAAs - especially leucine - are potent regulators of protein turnover and are currently used clinically to aid in the recovery of burn victims or those suffering from other hypercatabolic states, as well as for supplementation by strength athletes. They are particularly involved in energy and muscle metabolism, and can be used directly as an energy source by muscles. Whilst Leucine appears to play the greater role in anabolism/catabolism, it would be premature to dismiss the actions of a combination of all three of the BCAA's, as together they can provide benefits that have not been shown to be produced by Leucine alone. Moreover it has been shown that varying the ratio between Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine can elicit quite differing and unique biological effects. BCAA's can act as neurotransmitters and are constituents of neuropeptides, which have neurotransmitter functions. By competing with tryptophan (limiting brain uptake), BCAA's reduce central fatigue syndrome associated with intense exercise, negating declines in force output and strength endurance. The main rationale behind consuming BCAA's in addition to diet, before, during, and/or after exercise is that exercise itself leads to a considerable increase in BCAA oxidation.

Consuming BCAA's at these times, replaces these oxidised molecules that have been released from muscle tissue, as well as acting to upregulate muscle protein synthesis. BCAA's also help to preserve glutamine levels after exercise, resulting in less immune system decline after heavy training. Indeed it would appear that by supplementing both BCAA and Glutamine simultaneously, may lead to reciprocal preservation, resulting in higher levels of both Glutamine and BCAA's in the body. Other benefits of BCAA supplementation during exercise are raised levels of anabolic hormones (testosterone, insulin and HGH), and an improved testosterone/cortisol ratio (anti-catabolic).
