The Branched Chain Amino Acids, Leucine, Valine and Isoleucine are three of the most important amino acids for regulating protein synthesis and helping to prevent muscle tissue breakdown during and immediately after a workout. Leucine in particular signals muscle protein synthesis by several pathways, most importantly via direct stimulation of insulin, non insulin related pathways, and activation of the mTOR pathway, a sub cellular mechanism which powerfully regulates rates of protein synthesis, particularly in muscle tissue.

The BCAAs are also structurally important, making up a large percentage of muscle tissue, and repeated studies have shown that a diet restricted in BCAAs, or any other essential amino acid, limits the body’s ability to synthesise new muscle. Branched Chain Amino Acid supplementation also plays a crucial role in preventing muscle catabolism during exercise by attenuating Leucine metabolism for energy.
