Essential Amino Acids
Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. Of the 20 amino acids that make up dietary protein, 9 are essential and 11 are non-essential. The nine amino acids that are generally regarded as essential for humans are : phenylalanine, valine, threonine, tryptophan, isoleucine, methionine, histidine, leucine, and lysine. An amino acid is considered essential because the body cannot make it from other dietary components.
The human body does not store excess amino acids for later use. Therefore, if one’s diet does not contain a full complement of the essential amino acids, a nutritional deficiency exists. The failure to obtain enough of even 1 of these 9 essential amino acids has serious health implications and can result in degradation of the body's proteins. In a clinical setting EAA's have been shown to be superior to a mixed protein diet in offsetting the Catabolic Effects of illness (caused from prolonged inactivity, hypercortisolemia etc), which suggests that EAA's may be an important supplement in offsetting age-related muscular atrophy (sarcopenia) in elderly populations.
Essential Amino acids have been shown to be rate limiting nutrients in muscle protein accretion. Recent research has shown that EAA's are superior to solid food in stimulating protein synthesis. In comparison to a normal mixed protein meal that contained 15 gms of EAA's, a supplement containing solely 15 gms of EAA's elicited a greater anabolic response. The quicker digestion rate and subsequent increase in concentration of extra-cellular EAA's elicited by the supplement, served as a higher amplitude trigger for protein synthesis.
Evidence suggests that supplementation between meals can attenuate post absorptive protein degradation without impairing the anabolic response of normal feedings. Moreover, EAA supplementation prior to (with carbohydrates) and following exercise provides an optimal environment for the stimulation of protein synthesis.
