Creatine ethyl ester, sometimes abbreviated to CEE, is a relatively new supplement and an alternative form of creatine to creatine monohydrate. In an effort to build on the success of creatine mono and improve the product, several companies began to investigate ways of making creatine even more stable and easier to absorb. Several new creatine compounds were been born of this experimentation – creatine malate, creatine alpha-ketoglutarate and creatine ethyl ester being the most popular, but it is CEE which has become the most well known.
The mechanism behind CEE’s suggested effectiveness is based on the theory that it’s attached alcohol ester makes it easier for the creatine molecule to enter the cell. Creatine Monohydrate is a stable molecule which is unfortunately not very lipophilic – it does not interact with fats well, and cannot use them efficiently as transport molecules. Ethyl esters however are naturally occurring compounds which are lipophilic, and in theory this allows a creatine molecule attached to an ethyl ester to be more bioavailable and easier for the body to transport and use.
It is also suggested that due to improved bioavailability creatine ethyl ester does not require as high a dosage as its monohydrate counterpart, with doses as low as 2.5g daily being touted as effective. Although popular, and looking good in theory, there is actually very little reliable scientific data demonstrating any advantage of CEE over creatine mono. Indeed two of the more recent studies show that CEE supplementation increases plasma creatinine levels significantly – an indicator that CEE may in fact be less stable than monohydrate in the body.
Despite its lack of scientific support, and poor comparisons to Creatine monohydrate in studies, CEE is still effective overall and many who use creatine as a supplement prefer it to monohydrate. In some users creatine ethyl ester gives a slight high soon after being taken, a mild and harmless reaction to the liver processing the alcohol ester.
