For many years the health and fitness industry has recognised the value of fish oils as a supplement. Providing high levels of the Omega 3 fatty acids, docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), contribute to an improved omega fatty acid balance and a significant reduction in inflammatory hormones, often resulting in superior markers of health and reduced susceptibility to various illnesses. Krill oil is an alternative or addition to standard fish oils which provides a few extra benefits.
Firstly, while Krill Oil contains the same beneficial balance of DHA and EPA as fish oil, it also contains other omega 3 fatty acids conjugated into phospholipid form. Phospholipids are the prime fatty acids used to construct the membranes of cells in animals, and their integrity is vital for optimum health. Although many diets contain moderate levels of phospholipids, most people do not consume enough of them and would benefit greatly from some form of supplementation. Recent studies have shown that consuming as little as one or two capsules of Krill Oil a day can significantly reduce levels of the nasty C-reactive protein, thereby reducing cellular inflammation.
A second benefit of Krill Oil is its capacity to reduce both LDL and total cholesterol levels. In a study first published in 2004, in comparison with regular fish oil, krill oil showed itself to be far more effective than standard fish oil even at a much lower dose. In direct comparisons 1g of krill oil showed superior decreases in LDL cholesterol and plasma triglycerides and a greater increase in HDL cholesterol than 3g of regular fish oils.
Thirdly, Krill Oil has been demonstrated to offer distinct relief for women who suffer from premenstrual syndrome (PMS). When taking 2g of krill oil for 45 days it was shown to improve cases of dysmenorrhea (weak or absent periods) and to significantly reduce the emotional disturbance related to PMS.
On top of all these benefits, krill oil also contains astaxanthin – a powerful antioxidant some ten times more potent than vitamin A but without the related toxicity issues at high doses.
Dosage suggestions for Krill Oil supplementation vary, but this is a supplement which shows benefits at low level consumption. Typical recommendations for improvement of cholesterol levels and inflammation are 2-4 capsules or 1-2g daily. Krill oil is best consumed with food, especially other dietary fats.
All in all krill oil is a very useful supplement, and can play an important role in improving cholesterol levels and omega fatty acid balance. In providing fats in the form of phospholipids it also offers a great deal of benefit, and the addition of a few krill oil capsules to the diet each day can have a distinct and positive effect upon health.
