HMB Powder

HMB (or beta-hydroxy betamethylbutyrate) is a derivative of the essential amino acid Leucine. HMB is naturally occurring within the body in small quantities where it plays an important role in protein synthesis.

Acting in several important ways, HMB has been shown both to reduce muscle catabolism and to increase the rate of protein synthesis thus make it a potentially potent agent for increasing lean tissue growth. HMB’s anti catabolic properties stem from its ability to disrupt the function of a group of cellular enzymes called proteolytes. Proteolytes are aggressive enzymes which increase the rate of protein degradation when the body is in a catabolic state such as immediately after a workout. Its anabolic properties function via several mechanisms, the most important being by increasing the efficiency of mTOR (mammalian target of rapamycin) a powerful activator of muscle hypertrophy.

HMB supplementation has also been show in various studies to help raise the muscles lactate threshold and reduce blood acidosis, the result of which is greater functional performance at high intensity levels, faster recovery between sets, and an increased capacity for work. In endurance training, HMB has also demonstrated an ability to increase the VO2 max (the maximum amount of oxygen the body can utilise for releasing energy in any one instance). This increases the amount of energy that can be used at any given time and thus allows a higher level of performance. Interestingly in resistance training, most of the benefits of HMB are shown to be more pronounced when exhaustive techniques such as negatives, forced reps and heavy partials are used.

Suggested Dosage
