Maltodextrin Powder

Maltodextrin is a man made carbohydrate produced from the hydrolysis of starch. This process gives a glucose polymer consisting of hydrogen bonded d-glucose molecules, similar in structure to a protein peptide.

While maltodextrin is classified as a complex carbohydrate, it is made from a very small chain of d-glucose molecules which in practice do little to slow down digestion. It is quickly broken down in the small intestines into glucose and hence has a similar GI rating to dextrose (d-glucose). Maltodextrin has been considered along with dextrose as the best carbohydrate source for delivering glucose for glycogen uptake post work out. Maltodextrin has the added benefit of aiding fluid uptake.
