Essential fatty acids, or EFAs, are fatty acids that cannot be constructed within an organism from other components; and therefore must be obtained from the diet. There are two families of EFAs: omega 3 and omega 6. Omega-3 fatty acids come in three main varieties: ALA (Alpha-Linolenic Acid), EPA (EicosoPentaenoic Acid) and DHA (DocosaHexaenoic Acid). ALA can be obtained through the diet by consuming nuts, seeds and dark leafy vegetables whilst EPA and DHA are obtained by consuming cold water fish. In theory, sufficient consumption of ALA should cover all your omega 3 requirements, as once ingested, the body can convert ALA into EPA and DHA.

However due to factors such as health, age and nutritional status, this conversion (normally around 3%) may be impaired, and in some populations where cold water fish has been a dietary stable (north-western Europeans) might actually be non-existent.

For these populations it is essential to obtain sufficient DHA/EPA from a dietary source and/or fish oil supplements. Both DHA and EPA have been extensively studied and their effects on human health have been found to be numerous. DHA and EPA can lead to losses of body fat; a nutrient partitioning effect shifted toward growth of lean tissues and loss of fat tissues; and an increased insulin sensitivity.
