Resveratrol Powder - 50
Resveratrol is a polyphenolic compound (a polyphenol) that can be commonly found in red wines and grapes but it is also present in significant amounts in purple grape juice, peanuts, some berries and Japanese knotweed. Resveratrol is found as cis and trans isomer and trans-resveratrol is the more abundant isomer in red wines and the skin of grapes. Though the cis isomer also exists in red wines, it is not available commercially (unlike trans isomer) and there is little known about the activity of this isomer. For those reasons, when resveratrol is mentioned, it is usually the trans isomer that is being referred to.
First isolated from the roots of white hellebore by Takaoka in 1940, it was later isolated from the roots of Japanese knotweed (polygonum capsidatum) in 1963. It was not until 1992 that it attracted wider attention when its presence was found in wine by Leroy Creasy and was suggested as the reason for cardioprotective effects of red wine. Later in 1997 interest for this molecule increased tremendously after a team of investigators reported that resveratrol inhibited the initiation, promotion, and progression of cancer in mice more efficiently than any of the other hundreds of substances used, showing the greatest potential against cancer (it inhibits aryl hydrocarbon-induced CYP1A1 expression and activity and inhibits COX-1).
The biological activities showed by resveratrol don't end with the anti-carcinogenic effects. It exhibits anti-oxidant properties greater than vitamin C, E or beta-carotene as well as being a natural anti-inflammatory (lowers COX-2). Its ability to restore glutathione levels also worth mentioning, since glutathione is body's main anti-oxidant. Another feature of resveratrol is the ability to repair damaged liver tissue (lowered ALT and AST values) due to its anti-oxidant action similar to S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe, a powerful liver protectant) and its anti-inflammatory action.
There is growing interest in resveratrol from anti-ageing groups, since it has been shown to increase the lifespan of several species. All of the characteristics presented above influence the ageing process but it's the unique ability of resveratrol to mimic calorie restriction (activates Sirtuin 1 gene) that makes it an exciting supplement to those that are interested in anti-ageing.
Being a polyphenol, resveratrol shows oestrogenic activity though it's seven times lower than soy and it acts like a SERM, making it a good choice to avoid bone loss. To those worried about oestrogenic side effects, resveratrol also showed to be an aromatase inhibitor, lowering the production of oestrogen.
