Acetyl L Carnitine, sometimes known as ALC or ALCAR, is an acetylated form of the non essential amino acid carnitine. Carnitine and ALCAR are both found naturally in plant and animal proteins, and can also be synthesised in small quantities within the body.

The main physiological role of carnitine is to help liberate energy from fatty acids, and it does this by a series of reactions involving acetyl-coA within the mitochondria of cells. In normal circumstances, acetyl-coA exists in higher quantities than carnitine and so carnitine supply can become a rate limiting factor in utilisation of energy from fats. By supplementing with ALCAR, this imbalance can be reduced and greater levels of fat oxidation achieved.
