One of the three Branched Chain Amino Acids and also an Essential Amino Acid, Leucine is a highly effective bodybuilding supplement and a very important amino acid for the regulation and maximisation of skeletal muscle protein synthesis.

Found commonly in meat and dairy, Leucine exhibits strong anabolic and anti-catabolic effects especially when taken as a stand alone supplement or when combined with the other BCAAs.

Leucine is able to positively affect the net protein balance of a muscle by simultaneously acting upon several anabolic pathways, most notably mTOR (a pathway responsible for signalling new protein growth) and the IP3K pathway (important for regulation of cell division and cell mortality). Leucine also increases levels of the hormone Insulin which aids the transport of amino acids into muscle tissue.

Leucine supplements also demonstrate anti-catabolic effects by sparing muscle Leucine against exercise induced oxidation, and also via its metabolites KIC and HMB both of which up regulate anti-catabolic processes when oxidation does occur.
