Green Tea is an old beverage that originated from China and is made only with the leaves of the tea plant (Camellia sinensis) that have been subject to minimal oxidation and fermentation during processing. Although tea is consumed for about 5000 years, first medical recommendations are from the year 1191 when the Zen priest Eisai writes about the benefices of tea and how to address several ailments with the use of tea.
There are several interesting elements found in green tea that have active properties: minerals, vitamins (A, C, and E), oils, caffeine, tannins, flavonoids (like flavanols and flavandiols) and phenolic acids. Flavonoids, aka bioflavonoids, are a class of plant secondary metabolites that belong to a group of chemical substances called polyphenols. Other known polyphenols are the tannins, also found in green tea.
From the flavonoid class, the most important flavonoids found in green tea are the catechins. Green tea catechins have high anti-oxidant properties (25-100 times more potent that vitamins E and C) and are responsible for most of the benefices related to green tea. The major four catechins in green tea leaves are epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epicatechin gallate (ECG), epigallocatechin (EGC) and epicatechin (EC).
All the properties and active ingredients of green tea can be found on green tea extract. Green tea extract is produced from the leaves of green tea and is a safe way to reap the benefices of green tea without having to take several cups of green tea.
Although green tea may offer several important benefits, excessive consumption may have some side effects due to the caffeine. The amount of caffeine present is not high but the user should consume green tea according to his personal tolerance to caffeine.
Supplementing with Green Tea Extract provides the following:
Each vegetarian capsule contains 750mg of Green Tea Extract [98% Polyphenol]
