Taurine Powder
Taurine is often referred to as a conditionally essential amino acid, even in scientific literature. But as it lacks a carboxyl group it is not strictly an amino acid, but rather an amino sulfonic acid as it contains a sulfonate group. Because of this difference with most other amino acids it is not incorporated into body proteins, but it does play many roles in the body, including bile acid conjugation, detoxification, membrane stabilization, osmoregulation, and modulation of both excitatory neurotransmission and intracellular calcium levels.
In addition, taurine appears to play a prominent role in cell volumizing, resulting in higher rates of protein synthesis as well as an increased appearance of muscle fullness. Moreover Taurine may decrease muscle breakdown, with doses as little as 1 gm showing a 20% decrease in levels of the catabolic compound 3-methylhistidine (3-MH). Taurine is also thought to enhance interstitial contractile leverage which may increase strength levels.
Taurine is also an inhibitory neurotransmitter, and plays a major role in stabilizing heartbeat and the electrical activity of nerves - which can result in a calming effect and improved sleep. In adults (but not children), this nutrient can be manufactured from methionine in the body and from cysteine in the liver, but only when sufficient vitamin B6 is present. The mean taurine intake in humans obtained through diet is estimated to be around 60 mg daily (from meats, fish, milk and eggs), but supplementation can far exceed this amount and readily increases taurine levels in many tissues.
